Land acknowledgement

Edmonton (ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ) is located within Treaty 6 Territory, and within the Métis homelands and Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4.

The World Science Fiction Convention is a celebration of stories, and as such we must honour and respect the stories of those who have called this land home since time immemorial.

Edmonton (ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ) is a land that should be understood through the stories and history of the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuliné (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot). These are cultures and communities with rich storytelling traditions that we honour.

To quote J. Edward Chamberlin: “People’s stories are as varied as the landscapes and languages of the world; and the storytelling traditions to which they belong tell the different truths of religion and science, of history and the arts.”

This land has been the home of Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years. We hope to bring an event here that will honour stories from your past, and celebrate stories of your future.
