An Acknowledgement of the Land
Our invitation to the world science fiction and fantasy fandom is an invitation to visit the land upon which the fandom of Edmonton ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ lives, works, plays, and gathers to share our stories.
It is a land that we recognise as being part of Treaty 6 Territory and the Fort Edmonton and Edmonton Whitemud Métis Districts within the Métis Nation homeland.
The World Science Fiction Convention is a celebration of stories, and as such we honour and respect the stories of all those who have called this land home since time immemorial.
It is a land that should be understood through the stories and history of the Nêhiyaw (Cree), Denesuliné (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot). These are cultures and communities with rich storytelling traditions that we honour.
To quote J. Edward Chamberlin, “People’s stories are as varied as the landscapes and languages of the world; and the storytelling traditions to which they belong tell the different truths of religion and science, of history and the arts.”
This land has been the home of Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years. We hope to bring an event here that will honour the stories of our past, and celebrate stories of our future.
